Golden Rule Brake History

The History of Golden Rule Brake

In February 1954 Lester and Harvey Low opened Golden Rule Brake. At that time, Lester was working for ACE Concrete as a mechanic. So in the beginning Harvey worked full-time and Lester worked in the evening and on Saturdays. This went on for over a year. Around March of 1955, they moved from Dishman to downtown Spokane  on 2nd Ave. Lester continued working at ACE for a few more months and then quit his job at ACE and went full time into the brake business. Soon after the move, business began to pick up and within another year the two brothers had hired an additional mechanic. Within a couple years they had hired two or three more mechanics. Business was good and growing.

By 1960 Harvey had sold his interest in the business to Lester and Lester had an idea for a new shop.  So he started looking around. He wanted to buy property and build a new shop and that's how he located the property at 625 North Monroe. It was a small piece of property and the size of the building would be smaller than their current location. So it had to be efficient. They moved in to the new location in 1961 and didn't miss a beat. Business stayed good and even improved, and they were able to do more business out of a smaller shop because of better production.

By the end of 1962, Lester had sold the entire business back to his brother Harvey and moved away to San Diego and started another brake shop.

Harvey continued to operate Golden Rule Brake until June 1, 1980, when his nephew (Lester's son) Jerry Low acquired the business.

Jerry had not been a part of the business since he was 16 years old, when he worked summers while attending high school. So there were a lot of changes in the business such as disc brakes, and many new models. Needless to say, Jerry had a lot to learn. With honesty , a quality job and the Golden Rule,  the business has grown to a total of three locations today.

In August of 1995 Golden Rule Brake opened its second location in Spokane at 815 East Francis. In a little over two years the Francis location was doing so well that Jerry and his wife Carolyn decided to look for a piece of property and build a shop in the Spokane Valley. That shop at 815 North Pines Road, was completed and open for business by July of 1998.

In June of 2008, Golden Rule Brake was devastated by a fire and near complete loss at their Monroe Street location. The rebuilding took six months and Golden Rule Brake saw this location reopen again on the 16th of December.

It's now 2010 and we are celebrating our 56th anniversary. Golden Rule Brake has survived many ups and downs in the economy including a three-year and nine-month Monroe Street Bridge closure. With the bridge being two blocks from our Monroe Street location,  there was a little nail biting but God has been good by having provided us with two other locations to help us through that time.

Our history at Golden Rule Brake has been riddled with both fortune and misfortune, however, this has helped create the company you know us as today. It has strengthened our core values to be firmer than ever before and, in turn, it has helped us strive to deliver excellent and consistent service to our customers for 56 years and counting.
